Urgent & Current Issues

Development pressures are increasing in many areas around the lake.  With this development are concerns for the watershed including increased soil erosion, increased runoff due to more impervious surfaces (new roads, driveways and roofs), and loss of rural character with its scenic, rolling, open hills.  Zoning and enforcement varies from municipality to municipality.  Some towns have up-to-date comprehensive plans and others do not.  Even with updated comprehensive plans there is no guarantee that those plans will be followed.  That is why citizen participation is so important.  Your input is critical.

This page will keep you up-to-date on issues affecting the watershed. It will tell you where you can go for the latest information.  The issues will range from development pressures to environmental pressures on our watershed.  Active participation by concerned citizens is the best way to bring changes in public policy that will keep our lake and watershed healthy.

Town of South Bristol:  The Ketmar Development  is a proposed development of 20 homes on 45 acres situated directly across Seneca Point Rd. from the entrance to the Lodge at Bristol.  The upscale homes would include access to a private, 30 boat marina at water's edge which would extend out into the lake 100 feet and be serviced by a roadway built through extemely steep and fragile shale cliffs.  There has been considerable public outcry regarding this development with the main concerns being: undermining of the Uniform Dockings and Moorings Law, the extreme excavation that will need to be untertaken to access the lakefront through the dramatic shale cliffs, the steepness of the land and the very high potential for erosion problems during building and runoff control after building is complete, and the loss of beautiful open space including part of a large hardwood forest with hundred plus year-old trees and most of all, the loss of rural character and scenic beauty.  If you are interested in following this issue more closely contact:

Town of Canandaigua:  RMS Development (Mancini Brothers)        A proposed development of 69 homes on 73 steep, hillside acres with a "private marina" including 135 docks and moorings.  This has been another controversial proposal with considerable public opposition.

Town of Gorham: East Lake View Subdivision near Turner Rd. is currently approved for building 48 homes with a possible future development of up to 200 homes.  This is only one of several developments in progress on the East side and although development has not been as fast on the east side of the lake, it is rapidly becoming an issue.  To stay informed about lake issues on the east side in particular please contact Stuart E. Norris who is president of the active East Shore Association.
